HULL: MKM Building Supplies has appointed David Moore as its new chief executive.

Mr Moore succeeds MKM co-founder David Kilburn, who becomes the new executive chairman of the Hull-headquartered company.

An accountant by profession, Mr Moore has more than 20 years’ main board experience in roles including CEO, CFO and business development, over 15 years’ of which have been spent in the building materials and construction sector.

He has significant experience growing and developing businesses in the UK and overseas, both with entrepreneurs and private equity-backed companies, and has worked in AIM and fully listed PLCs.

Mr Moore said he had been looking for a ‘something special’ while considering his next post but added that he felt a strong synergy with MKM’s ethos of putting the customer at the heart of its operations.

“The business has a great culture, pedigree and strong market position and I believe I can build on that to really add value,” Mr Moore said.

“We are currently going through a £20m expansion phase which is seeing new branches coming on stream across the UK and job creation at a time when other companies are cutting back. It is an exciting time and the business has strong potential. I’m eager to take on this new challenge and, along with David (Kilburn), lead MKM through its next level of development.”

As executive chairman, Mr Kilburn will continue to be closely involved in the day-to-day running of the business.

He set MKM Building Supplies up 17 years ago with fellow co-founder Peter Murray and since that time has grown it to become the UK’s largest independent builders merchant.

Welcoming Mr Moore to the team Mr Kilburn said: “David has an outstanding CV and I’m delighted with the appointment. I’m looking forward to working closely with him as I’m sure his experience and energy will help us capitalise on our successes to date and drive MKM on to even bigger and better things.”
