Leading civil engineering specialist Wrekin Products has launched the Armadillo Silt Shield, a groundbreaking product designed to tackle silt and debris challenges on construction sites again and again.

This sustainable solution offers an environmentally-conscious, cost-effective approach to protecting watercourses, reducing flood risk and complying with regulatory requirements.

Silt and debris from construction sites pose a significant risk to drainage systems, often leading to blockages, flooding and environmental implications that can result in sanctions should waterways be affected.

Armadillo Silt Shield aims to directly address these challenges with its innovative three-component design: a robust steel silt bucket, a simple-to-install locator plate and a geotextile filter bag. Together, these components provide a reliable system for filtering out debris and contaminants before they enter the drainage systems, offering a practical and sustainable solution which can be used multiple times before being fully recycled at the end of its life cycle.

John Kiernan, product manager, at Wrekin said: “We provide innovative solutions that simplify complex challenges while prioritising sustainability. The Armadillo Silt Shield embodies this aim, offering a simple yet highly effective solution for silt management that supports construction professions in meeting regulatory demands and protecting the environment.”

Complementing Wrekin’s broader environmental campaign – ‘The Sea Starts Here’ – the use of the Armadillo Silt Shield raises awareness of watercourse contamination and promotes sustainable drainage practices. This product combats some of the most pressing challenges in the construction industry - protecting our environment and preserving waterways.

With ease of use in mind, installation is straightforward and labour friendly, requiring no complex tools or processes. Its retrofittable design allows users to relocate the system as and when needed, such as when a site phase ends or when protection is no longer needed, ensuring protection where it is required most. The filter bags, constructed from durable geotextile fabric, are not only cost-efficient but environmentally sound. These might be best used in the construction of new housing developments, where gully grates are exposed and subject to significant silt and debris.

Armadillo Silt Shield is an easy-to-retrofit solution for Wrekin’s Tristar 450x450 gully gratings, making it ideal for both new and ongoing developments. Unlike permanent silt management systems, it can be fully removed once no longer needed, allowing the gully to return to its full operational capacity and ensuring long-term water flow remains unrestricted.
