LUTON: Michael Dandy has retired as managing director of builders’ merchants Gibbs and Dandy after almost 30 years with the company, the last 23 of them as managing director.

During that time the company experienced the most rapid growth in its 170-year history, expanding its branch network to 12 sites serving an area from the Thames Valley up to Leicestershire with sales which exceeded £60m.

Mr Dandy will remain involved with the business as a non-executive director. He is succeeded as managing director by William Naylor, previously the company’s sales and commercial director. At the same time Glyn Hodges, who is currently a member of the management team, joins the board as operations director.

Gibbs and Dandy was a fully-listed plc before being acquired by Saint-Gobain Building Distribution UK in July 2008. It remains an independent brand within SGBD and added one new branch in 2009.
