The project involved building an extension for the family of a boy who is living with Mitochondrial Disease

Tarmac’s Cement and Lime business was proud to sponsor Band of Builders’ latest project, providing funds and Blue Circle products to build an extension for the family of a boy who is living with Mitochondrial Disease.

Band of Builders, a charity which lends a helping hand to tradesmen during their time of need, developed a small extension on the front of the Dodd family’s house, with ramped access to make the property more accessible for their son, James.

James’ Mitochondrial Disease is a life-limiting condition to which there is no cure. Having lost the use of his legs, he is now reliant on a wheelchair and walking frame. Band of Builders was keen to support the Dodd family and provide James with a convenient access point to the family home to make everyday life more comfortable.

Gavin Crane, Trustee at Band of Builders, said: "For an 11-year-old, James really has been through an awful lot. Mitochondrial Disease is not only rare, but also very difficult to diagnose. James still attends mainstream school, but he can no longer hold a pencil so requires a special tablet for his schoolwork.”

“Despite dealing with his illness, James is still a cheeky, funny 11-year-old. He and his family really are an inspiration to us all and we're privileged that we could help with our first Band of Builders project of 2020. It won't go any way to changing what this family has to go through, but it might just make things a little bit easier.

"We're always on the lookout for more projects to help people, so please don't hesitate to get in touch if you are, or know, a tradesperson who needs our help."
