Thornbridge Timber, a long-established name within Scotland’s timber and sheet materials sector, has entered a new chapter following the acquisition of its Motherwell branch and the wider Thornbridge brand by Rodger Group Holdings, an independent, family-owned Scottish building materials group.
Founded in 1992, Thornbridge originally operated from a sawmill in Grangemouth and went on to build a strong reputation across Scotland’s construction and manufacturing sectors, serving both trade and commercial customers. Over more than three decades, the business developed a loyal customer base and became a recognised name within the Scottish timber trade.
The transaction sees Rodger Group Holdings acquire the Motherwell trading operation together with the Thornbridge brand and associated intellectual property, bringing the brand back into independent Scottish ownership. The business will now trade as Thornbridge Timber, operating initially from the Motherwell site.
The Motherwell branch will continue trading with its existing management team and workforce, with all staff transferring as part of the transaction. The business will be supported by Rodger Group’s wider operational infrastructure and logistics capability, enabling Thornbridge Timber to stabilise operations and serve customers across a broader geographic area.
Mark Rodger, Group Managing Director of Rodger Group Holdings, said: “Thornbridge is a name that carries real recognition and loyalty within the Scottish timber trade. Our focus is not to dilute that, but to protect it. This acquisition is about safeguarding jobs, supporting customers, and rebuilding the Thornbridge brand with clarity, continuity and long-term commitment. We believe strongly in the value of independent, Scottish-owned merchants serving their local markets properly.”
Rodger Group Holdings owns and operates a portfolio of construction-related businesses across Scotland, including builders’ merchants Build Depot, bathroom and tile retailer Bath & Tile Studio, and specialist energy-efficiency products supplier GTi Direct. The Group has pursued a strategy of investing in established Scottish businesses with strong local identities, operational expertise and experienced management teams.
The acquisition does not include Thornbridge’s former sawmill operations in Grangemouth. The Group’s immediate priority is to ensure continuity for existing customers, suppliers and staff at Motherwell, while investing in systems, transport capability and stock availability to support future growth.
Martyn Chalmers, Branch Manager at Thornbridge Timber Motherwell, added: “This gives our team and our customers much-needed stability and a clear future. Thornbridge has always stood for knowledge, service and reliability, and with the backing of Rodger Group we can now focus fully on rebuilding the business and supporting our customers with confidence.”
Thornbridge will continue trading from its Motherwell location, with further announcements expected in due course as the business develops its next phase.
