Covers Timber and Builders Merchants has made possible the construction of a 13-year-old’s dream log cabin, giving her added determination to recover from cancer treatment.

While undergoing a major bone marrow transplant for Myelodysplasia, a blood disorder which in some cases develops into Leukaemia, Rays of Sunshine approached Carly Derby, of Saltdean, East Sussex, and asked her to name her greatest wish.

She thought back to her happiest memories with family at a log cabin in the New Forest and asked for one of her own.

For the remainder of her seven weeks in hospital she dreamed of how the log cabin would look.

Ms Derby was brought home from London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital thanks to the efforts of both the Rays of Sunshine charity and donations made by Covers’ Brighton depot.

Covers donated decking, timber and other building materials with which RWL Building Services is now constructing the cabin.

Ms Derby is recovering well following chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment and will be able to watch wildlife from the garden cabin when it is completed in July.

Clare Derby, Carly’s mum, said: “We feel so blessed that Carly is making a fantastic recovery against the odds. Having her wish granted gave Carly the fighting spirit to get well enough to go home. It really gave her strength and focus and for that we are so grateful.

“When I told Carly that something had arrived for her as the Covers lorry pulled up at the house with all the donated materials, she was just so excited. Every day we watch the log cabin being built, and are all set for a completion date of July 1, which is Carly’s 13th birthday.”

Paul Allwright, manager at Covers’ Brighton depot, added: “At Covers we pride ourselves on having strong community values. We are delighted to have played a part in getting Carly back home to her family where she belongs. Helping to make this wish come true for Carly has been a privilege.”
