Saint-Gobain UK and Ireland has been recognised in WWF-UK’s 2015 Timber Scorecard for its commitment to buying and sourcing sustainable timber and timber products.
The company’s Building Distribution sector was awarded three trees – the highest score – by WWF-UK for sourcing over 90% certified sustainable wood and having policies in place to drive sustainability.
Richard Halderthay, director of communications at Saint-Gobain UK Ireland and South Africa, said: “Saint-Gobain is proud to have been recognised for its commitment to the sourcing of sustainable timber and timber products in the 2015 Timber Scorecard. There’s always more that can be done in this area, and we continue to work positively and closely with the WWF, through our long-standing membership of WWF’s Global Forest Trade Network to continually look at our approach.”
Julia Young from WWF-UK, who leads the Global Forest and Trade Network (GFTN) programme, added: “Saint-Gobain UK and Ireland have worked over many years to source the timber for their brands from well-managed forests, including supporting forest producers who are on their way to certification in some of the most difficult places, like the Congo Basin countries.
“The fact that such a high proportion of their whole supply chain for timber has been confirmed as coming from certified sources is a great achievement – and making sure their customers and other stakeholders know this is equally important and contributed to their scorecard result.
“They can add significant value to the tropical timber trade by continuing to source and supply FSC certified tropical timber to the UK market, and while challenging, this is hugely impactful, and something the business can be proud of as it continues to deliver in this area."
