A former horse box has been converted into an ambulance, thanks to materials donated by Ariel Plastics, on the Channel Island of Sark.
As no cars are allowed on the tiny island, the 500+ residents get around by foot, bicycle or horse and cart. If there is an emergency, the local Community First Responders fire up a tractor with the ambulance in tow to reach those in need of medical help as quickly as possible.
The Sark Ambulance Service is a volunteer-run emergency medical response service supported by the island’s doctor and the team at Ambulance and Rescue Guernsey, who not only provide backup but also have the Flying Christine ambulance boat permanently stationed in St Peter Port harbour, if residents need to be transferred to Guernsey.
As the old ambulance was coming to the end of its working life, the Sark Ambulance Service reached out for help to Norman Piette – the largest timber and builders’ merchant in Guernsey – which, in turn, asked one of its trusted suppliers, Ariel Plastics, for a donation of hygienic cladding sheets to be installed in the interior of the horse box.
Ariel Plastics – which is the UK’s largest plastics distribution company and has served the builders’ merchant market for more than 60 years – was only too willing to donate six of its Coroclad Satin solid PVC hygienic cladding sheets, which are tough and durable and prevent microbial materials from being absorbed into the sheets.
