The course focuses on the practical skills needed to accurately plan flat roofing projects and avoid common mistakes.
Roofing specialist BMI UK & Ireland has launched an industry-leading flat roof materials estimating course as part of its continued drive to address the roofing industry’s growing skills shortage. Developed by the BMI Academy’s expert training team, the course responds to increasing demand for practical training on flat roof materials estimation.
Faced with an industry-wide skills crisis, the flat materials estimating course aims to tackle the apparent gap in available training for flat roofing professionals in the UK. Combining theoretical and practical learning, it helps contractors gain confidence, avoid common estimation errors and deliver accurate, high-quality project outcomes.
Steven Taylor, Technical Specification Manager at BMI, said: “A common mistake when ordering materials for a flat roofing project is underestimating requirements. Estimators must account for a variety of factors to ensure accurate material quantity take-offs and minimise waste. Our course highlights these key considerations, helping contractors plan effectively and achieve reliable, high-quality installations.”
Stuart Farndell, Lead Technical Trainer at BMI Academy, added: “Since the introduction of our pitched material estimating course, we’ve frequently been asked for a flat equivalent. It’s a completely different set of skills, and we’re fortunate to have a team that’s rich in specialist knowledge, allowing us to develop courses that directly meet our customers’ needs.”
BMI Academy remains committed to supporting and developing the future of the roofing industry through high-quality, accessible training. Its growing portfolio of courses promotes best practice, helps mitigate common errors and costly delays, and aims to futureproof skillsets across the sector.
Taylor added: “Failure to understand project needs and specifications often leads to mistakes on site. The course covers technologies such as Bitumen and Single Ply, providing the depth of knowledge needed to confidently approach estimation. Strengthening technical understanding is key to improving roofing practices, ensuring proper specification and installation, and supporting the next generation of skilled professionals.”
