Permavent highlights the work of Technical Manager Graham Copson whose career has embodied the power of education and apprenticeships in shaping the future of construction.

As part of the UK’s ongoing focus on apprenticeships, Permavent is proud to highlight Technical Manager Graham Copson, whose career embodies the power of education and apprenticeships in shaping the future of construction.

With over 40 years in the roofing and construction industry, and recently named the Pitched Roofing Award 2025 winner for Outstanding Contribution to the Industry, Copson began his career as an apprentice, a three-year slating and tiling programme that ignited his commitment to continual learning and raising industry standards.

At a time when roofing faces a serious skills shortage, industry bodies warn that without sustained investment in training and young talent, the sector risks long-term decline. Education has been a constant thread throughout Copson’s career, but his greatest impact comes from sharing his knowledge openly.

Copson supports this effort by mentoring students and delivering CPDs and college sessions across the UK, helping equip the next generation with the skills needed to future-proof the construction industry. In the past year alone, he has presented to more than 2,000 professionals, apprentices, and students, offering his open, practical approach, through clear, experience-based guidance builds confidence in young roofers and helps them develop safe, effective, high-quality practices and industry standards.

His philosophy is simple: “If we want a strong construction industry tomorrow, we must invest in educating young people today.”

Copson may not view himself as a traditional leader, but his influence is undeniable. Every hour he spends mentoring and every student he inspires helps build a stronger, more skilled, and future-ready roofing workforce.

Permavent not only celebrates Copson’s achievements but also recognises the vital role that education and skills development play in securing the future of the construction industry, highlighting the power of apprenticeships to transform careers and strengthen the sector.
