On 29 June, more than 400 people gathered at Bury FC’s Gigg Lane ground in Manchester to witness a closely contested football match between two of the UK’s largest builder’s merchants: Jewson and Howarth Timber.
The event, organised by Jewson’s team captain and General Manager Jason Cadogan, was held in support of The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, a specialist cancer hospital in Manchester. In addition to the match, funds were raised through a range of family-friendly activities, including face painting, a caricaturist, and a sweets table.
In the end, Howarth Timber clinched the win with a dramatic last-minute goal, ending the match 5-4. The event concluded with a cheque presentation of over £12,000 to The Christie Charity’s mascot, Christie Bear.
Reflecting on the day, Jason Cadogan said: “It was great to see two merchants come together for a common cause – truly showing the power of community over competition. Even though we were a bit deflated by the final score, facing off against Howarth Timber in support of The Christie Charity was a proud moment for all of us.
“We’re also incredibly grateful to the stadium for hosting us. Many of the Jewson lads had never played in a proper stadium before – having individual changing rooms and a bar reception really added to the experience and atmosphere.”
Regional Managing Director Kieran Griffin, who attended in support, added: “These types of events are massive because it's all about building teamwork, supporting the local community, and enhancing the presence and awareness of Jewson.”
A spokesperson from The Christie Charity expressed their appreciation: “Jewson has been a valued charity partner for many years, and their continued support has helped us fund life-saving treatments and transform lives. It’s fantastic to see them organising yet another event in aid of our work. They raised an incredible amount for the charity, and we couldn’t be more grateful for their dedication and generosity.”
Though this was a one-off event, it left a lasting impression on everyone involved. With the enthusiasm shown by players and supporters alike, and Jewson’s captain already eyeing a rematch, there’s hope this could be the beginning of a new tradition.
