Rapid-response roof truss package gets historic pub operational within weeks.
Calldene Structural Timber Solutions, one of the South East’s most experienced structural timber engineering specialists, delivered a bespoke roof truss package to support the rapid restoration of the fire-damaged Shinfield Arms pub in Berkshire – helping the historic premises reopen to customers within weeks and protecting the exposed building from winter weather.
Following a kitchen fire that destroyed the roof of the 500-year-old Shinfield Arms in Shinfield, Berkshire, the building was left exposed to the winter elements and forced temporary closure. Specialist refurbishment contractor Vidette UK, was appointed to carry out the repairs and turned to Calldene Structural Timber Solutions to design and supply bespoke timber roof trusses to replace the damaged structure – enabling the premises to reopen to the community within weeks.
“We have a good working relationship with Calldene and knew they would be able to provide the trusses we needed,” said Steve Butcher, CEO of Vidette UK.
With the pub located on a busy village road and limited space on site, the project presented logistical challenges – including the inability to use a crane to lift materials into place. Precise measurements and careful planning were required to ensure the new roof fitted seamlessly with the original structure that had survived the fire.
Calldene engineers visited the site immediately to carry out a risk assessment and take detailed measurements. Within just one week, the bespoke trusses were designed and manufactured off-site, before being delivered and manually installed due to restricted access.

“Roof trusses are individually engineered components designed to provide structural support to the roof structure,” said Darren Moore, Commercial & Technical Manager at Calldene. “Precision-engineered off-site, the trusses are of a consistent quality and can be installed quickly.”
“We knew time was of the essence. Without a roof, the pub had to close temporarily for safety. Once the roof was back in place, they would at least be able to continue serving drinks and keep the business running.”
The Shinfield Arms was able to reopen for drinks just three weeks after the blaze, allowing the pub to continue serving the local community while kitchen repairs were completed. During the final stages of restoration, food was provided via a food truck from sister pub The Bletchingley Arms, set up in a heated garden tent.
“Working with Calldene, we were able to rebuild the roof very quickly,” added Butcher. “The Shinfield Arms is now fully reopened with a custom-designed and building regulation compliant roof that will protect the historic pub for many years to come.”
