Kent Blaxill Builders' Merchant, part of IBMG, has announced it is closing down at least one of its two remaining branches, after 187 in business.
Established in 1838, Kent Blaxill was an independent family-owned decorating, glass and building products distribution company which operated from 23 branches across the East of England and the South East, until it was acquired from the by Paintwell in November 2022.
In June 2023, IBMG purchased the trade, assets, and brand of the two Kent Blaxill builders’ merchants branches located in Colchester and Bury St Edmunds, although it did not acquire the legal company Kent, Blaxill & Co, Ltd. The branches became legally part of Chandlers Building Supplies Ltd.
In February this year, in response to remours to that effect, both Kent Blaxill and IBMG published statements on their website, denying that the merchant was about to close. The Kent Blaxill statement said: "Contrary to some reports within the industry Kent Blaxill Builders Merchants have NOT entered into administration, and still operate as part of the Independent Builders Merchant Group .
"Our Builder’s Merchant Sites at Colchester and Bury St Edmunds, as well as our Kitchen, Bathroom, Plumbing and Heating Branch at Colchester remain unchanged."
At the time, reports warned that IBMG itself was facing financial restructuring; something that was eventually confirmed by the group earlier this month.
Now Kent Blaxill has sent an email to customers confirming that it will be closing its Colchester branch in July.
It said: "We are writing to let you know that Kent Blaxill Builders Merchants will be permanently closing as of Saturday 12th July 2025.
"Having proudly served the Colchester community since 1838, we’ve had the privilege of being part of your lives for nearly two centuries – through generations of families, changing times, and countless shared moments. Our roots in this community run deep, and we are incredibly grateful for the trust, loyalty, and support you’ve shown us throughout the years.
"This decision was not made lightly. While the time has come for us to close our doors, our pride in what we’ve built – together with you – will endure. The relationships we’ve formed and the memories we’ve created will remain an important part of our story. Thank you for allowing us to be part of yours."
The fate of the Bury St Edmunds branch isn't clear at the moment. IBMG has been contacted for clarification.
Earlier this month, RGB Building Supplies, also part of IBMG, closed its Plymouth branch.
