Long Rake Spar Site Supervisor Martin Wildgoose, who is based at the company's Youlgrave production site, has reached 25 years of service with the company.
Wildgoose first joined the company to step into a role left open by a friend. What began as a temporary summer job quickly turned into a career. His first role was on the night shift, bagging 50kg products – in the days before the bagging shed even existed – braving all the elements through that first winter.
Over the years, Wildgoose has watched the company become busier and witnessed first-hand how the industry has evolved. “It’s been motivating to stay busy and know you’re doing a good job,” he said.
When asked about the challenges he has encountered, Wildgoose recalls “fighting the elements in winter” as one of the toughest parts of the job. Despite the weather, his proudest achievement is simple but powerful: still being here 25 years later.
There have been a few funny moments along the way too – including an escaped pig on the yard that refused to be caught, and a huntsman spider that arrived unexpectedly in a container load!
Wildgoose credits the company’s supportive culture for his long service. He’s been able to move into different areas whenever he wanted to and has always felt encouraged with training along the way.
Asked to sum up 25 years in three words, Wildgoose said: “Gone very quickly.” His advice for new starters? “Stick with it.”
Looking ahead, Wildgoose is happy to continue as normal and see what the future brings.
