The list of the first 50 companies celebrated in this year's edition of the award-winning Top 100 series has been released.

The fifth in a series of Top 100 events, in a partnership between the Builders Merchants Federation and Builders’ Merchants News, focuses on companies that have been serving the building materials industry for half a century or more.

The Builders Merchants Federation and Builders’ Merchants News have partnered once again to celebrate success in the building materials industry, this time recognising 100 companies who have been established for a minimum of 50 years.

This is the first time Top 100 has focused on companies rather than individuals and the total list of 100 companies will comprise of 50 builders’ merchants and 50 supplier/manufacturer/service companies who have had a proven record for at least half a century.

The concept of the prestigious Top 100 event is to bring together those companies who have been at the forefront of the industry for 50 years - and counting - which ties in to the 50th anniversary of Builders’ Merchants News.

To be considered companies had to provide evidence of the year they were created and complete an online form on the BMN website.

Nominations were hosted on our website where companies were invited to give reasons, in 200-500 words, why your company should be considered for the Top 100 Presents 50 companies over 50.

John Newcomb, BMF Chief Executive Officer, said: “The past few years have shown how quickly external influences can shape our industry, while highlighting the remarkable resilience and adaptability that underpin its success.

“As we honour the top 100 building material companies, each established over 50 years ago, we celebrate a proud heritage built on innovation, reliability, and integrity. These organisations have thrived by embracing change, while remaining true to the values that define our sector.

“Their enduring legacy is not just a tribute to the past but a guiding light for the future of our sector. I also take pride in the fact that BMF is itself nearing 120 years of history, exemplifying the same traditions of resilience and progress that continue to inspire our industry.”

Lucyanne Matthews, BMN Associate Publisher, added: “Many of you may know that Builders’ Merchants News turns 50 this May so we are proud to have joined forces once again with BMF to recognise companies whose legacy, like ours, stretches over half a century.

“The wealth of entries has been astounding this year. There is real pride within merchanting and building material suppliers to shine a light on their company’s history and longevity.

“A standout for me is how many companies have spanned more than 50 years. This is a testament to the strength of the people who work within the industry, those people who are making a difference and will continue the legacy of their companies with pride. I am looking forward to celebrating this May with all those representatives at the gala dinner.”

A panel of industry peers considered all applications and the first list in Top 100 Presents – 50 Companies over 50, can be revealed this month.

This edition highlights The Top 50 Merchants over 50, while The Top 50 Suppliers will be unveiled in March.

All 100 businesses will be celebrated at a black-tie gala dinner on the 14 May 2026, at The Belfry, Sutton Coldfield.
