A "pioneering" wellbeing initiative designed specifically for the home improvement and building products industry has officially launched.
During Mental Health Awareness Week, the Rainy Day Trust (RDT), the only charity dedicated to supporting the wellbeing of workers across the home improvement, DIY, and building products sector, has launched its Employee Ambassador Programme, a first-of-its-kind initiative that trains members of the industry to become proactive mental health ambassadors for the people around them.
Construction and trades workers, in an industry where around 90% of the workforce is male - a demographic statistically less likely to seek help or speak out, are three to four times more likely to die by suicide than the national average. For every worker who loses their life in a workplace accident, around 10 die by suicide. Financial insecurity, physical strain, isolation and a deep-rooted culture of 'getting on with it' compound the risk every single day.
The RDT Ambassador Programme aims to change that. Rather than relying on external interventions, it aims to empower people from within the industry, those who truly understand the pressures of the sector, to be a visible, trusted first point of contact for anyone who might be struggling.
Ambassadors receive a full day of interactive training covering what wellbeing really means, the mental health landscape in our industry, how to spot the signs that someone may be struggling, how to start a meaningful conversation using open, empathetic questioning, and how to signpost colleagues to the right support. They then become part of an ongoing network who are supported by the Rainy Day Trust team.
The aim, says the trust, is not about turning colleagues into counsellors, but to create a culture where no one feels alone.
Two companies have so far led the way as the programme's founding partners.
Staff at IRSAP UK, the radiator manufacturer and supplier, and Barrettine, the specialist wood treatment manufacturer and distributor, have completed their first Ambassador Training days, producing a combined network of 11 trained ambassadors across the businesses.
Andy, Managing Director at IRSAP UK, explained: "As a business, we talk a lot about taking care of our people, but this programme asked us to back that up with action. Investing in our ambassadors is one of the most important decisions we've made. The mental health of our workforce isn't a 'nice to have', it's a leadership responsibility, and we're committed to getting this right."
Steve, Managing Director at Barrettine, added: "Clearly, we live in very challenging times, and often very worrying, both at home and internationally. Not only the stress and worry these issues cause, but also the financial uncertainty, with rising costs almost everywhere. We see this with our own colleagues as well as the Businesses we partner with, and so this is why it matters so much to us at Barrettine.
"Having trained ambassadors who truly understand that world, and who our colleagues can trust and turn to for help & guidance, could genuinely save lives. We're proud to be one of the first Companies to have trained Ambassadors and our sincere thanks to Anna & Roz."
With 11 ambassadors already trained and over 50 more scheduled across the coming weeks and months, momentum is building rapidly. Toolbank and Stax are among the next companies set to begin their ambassador journeys.
Anna Skeat, CEO of the Rainy Day Trust, commented: "We have talked about mental health in this industry for long enough. Now we are doing something about it — through the very people who walk in the shoes of our sector every day. The Ambassador Programme is not just a training day; it is the beginning of a cultural shift that this industry so urgently needs. We are calling on every builder's merchant, every supplier, every distributor to join us."
The Rainy Day Trust is inviting businesses across the builders' merchant and building products supply chain to find out more about bringing the Ambassador Programme to their teams.
