UK: The deadly threat of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning will be the focus of a Christmas storyline on ITV’s Coronation Street.

Corrie star Fiz Stape, played by Jennie McAlpine, will fall prey to the silent killer in a story that is bound to grip the millions who watch the show.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) report that there are around 50 deaths a year in the UK from accidental CO poisoning in England and Wales – with around 4000 people admitted to hospital with CO symptoms.

A recent survey by Gas Safety Week highlighted the confusion about CO poisoning – with many under the misconception that symptoms include memory loss and a funny taste in the mouth.

Plumb Center and Parts Center have a full range of CO alarm products in more than 500 branches nationwide. Keith Jones, managing director of Plumb Center and Parts Center welcomes the soap’s storyline.

Mr Jones said: “The number of people killed or seriously affected by the effects of CO poisoning are simply unacceptable. And yet CO detectors are simple to install and inexpensive to buy.”
